Black Russian

The Black Russian was created in 1949 in Brussels by bartender Gustave Tops for U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, Perle Mesta. It is simply a mix of vodka and coffee liqueur, named for its dark color and the association of vodka with Russia. It is the predecessor to the White Russian cocktail.
